This year, I participated in the #vintagebookweek26 challenge, which involves redrawing four original vintage book covers in a personal style. I found out about the challenge pretty late so intuition, quick decisions, and simplification guided my process. Even within a limited time I had a lot of fun with drawing these:D.
Being me I could not resist testing out more than one color version for this cover.
I started with a simple sketch of the cover. I added some of my own animals to the mix:).
When the sketch is mostly done I always try to find a few different colour combinations. I went for traditional, a bit more saturated and more me one. The blue one (which turned out to be my favourite and my first choice for this) I did from one of my saved colour pallets in procreate - what a surprise:D. The last one was a challenge for me since I never do monochromatic illustrations and I wanted to try to push myself a bit.
Than when most colour decisions are done I start with flat colors + some color variation and go from there to full render.
Here is the final cover without the title:)

Here are some mockups of each colour variation.
